Children and Young People
Helping children understand how their minds work can change the course of their whole life.
When a child understands why they feel anxious, or angry, or worried, something powerful happens. They stop believing there's something wrong with them, and they start to feel back in control.
As a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist in Ferndown, Dorset, I offer warm, gentle therapy for children (age 6+) and teenagers, in person and online, using age-appropriate techniques to help young people feel calmer, braver and more confident.

Parents are not just looking for therapy. They're looking for hope.
As a parent, watching your child struggle, and not knowing how to help, is one of the hardest things there is.
Maybe bedtimes have become a battle. Maybe they're worried about school, or an exam, or friendships. Maybe there's a fear or a habit that's affecting everyday life. Maybe they simply don't seem like their happy, carefree self anymore.
What most parents really want is that moment when their child looks up and says, "Oh… I understand now. I'm not the only one, and I'm not broken." That moment is often where everything begins to change.
"My daughter, who is 9, spent 12 consecutive weeks working with Helen, and I cannot even begin to describe the change we found in her. Before we found Helen, we really didn't know how else to help her with her behaviour and sleep. For years we had researched and tried endless things, but nothing seemed to work. We noticed a difference within a few short weeks. Helen was so encouraging and kept us constantly informed, our daughter got on so well with her and always looked forward to their sessions together. I can't thank you enough for the work you've done and the tools you've given our daughter."

Children are fascinated when they discover why they feel the way they do
Children are often surprised, and hugely relieved, to learn that feelings like anxiety, fear and anger aren't signs that something is wrong with them. They're natural, primitive responses from a brain that's simply trying to keep them safe.
Once a child realises that, the fear itself often begins to shrink. I love watching that moment happen. It's frequently the first time a child truly understands that their mind is on their side, and that they can learn to guide it.
From there, we can gently begin building confidence, emotional resilience and calmer ways of responding, skills that can support them not just now, but right through childhood, adolescence and into adult life.
Children (age 6–12)
For younger children, hypnotherapy is a safe, gentle and non-invasive approach, and it's often especially effective because children have such wonderful imaginations.
Importantly, children never have to "explain themselves" or talk through anything they find difficult or embarrassing. Instead, I use age-appropriate tools like storytelling, imagination, visualisation and supported goal-setting to help them feel calmer and more capable.
I support children with:
-
Worries and anxiety
-
Confidence and self-esteem
-
Sleep and bedtime worries
-
Fears and phobias
-
Exam and test nerves
-
Unwanted habits
-
Big feelings like anger or frustration
I work with both neurotypical and neurodiverse children, including those with a diagnosis of autism, ADHD or a learning disability. As a mum of two, one of whom has a learning disability, and after a decade volunteering as a sports coach with children and adults with special needs, this work is especially close to my heart.
Teenagers
The teenage years can feel like a lot, all at once.
Identity. Friendships. Exams and the pressure to perform. Social media and constant comparison. Overthinking. Feeling left behind or not good enough. And sometimes, the worry becomes so big that going to school itself starts to feel impossible.
I work with teenagers in a way that feels grown-up and respectful. We talk about what's actually going on for them, and I help them understand something that often feels like it changes everything: that so much of what they're feeling comes from the primitive, protective part of the brain doing its job a little too enthusiastically.
When a teenager realises "There's nothing wrong with me, my brain is just trying to protect me", so much of the fear and self-criticism can start to melt away. From there, we build genuine confidence, calmer thinking, and the ability to find their own voice.
Teenagers come to me for support with:
-
Teen anxiety and worry
-
Confidence and self-belief
-
Exam stress and performance nerves
-
School avoidance and school-related anxiety
-
Friendship and social pressures
-
Overwhelm and overthinking
-
Anger and frustration
-
Sleep

How hypnotherapy helps young people (the simple science)
I always explain this in age-appropriate language, to the young person and to their parents, because understanding it is the foundation for positive change.
A young person's brain, like all of ours, has a primitive protective part whose job is to look out for danger. When a child or teenager is stressed, that part becomes overactive, and everyday things can start to feel frightening or overwhelming. It's not a character flaw, it's simply the brain doing its job.
The wonderful news is that young brains are especially adaptable. Through calm, positive focus and gentle guided relaxation, we can help a young person's brain build new, more helpful patterns, so that calm and confidence gradually become their natural default. And because we're teaching them how their own mind works, they carry these tools with them for life.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session for children or teens?
Therapy sessions are relaxed, friendly and completely pressure-free.
We usually begin with a warm chat about the good things going on, as well as what they'd like to feel more of. There's never any need to relive difficult experiences or explain things they'd rather not. Depending on the age, we'll incorporate games to play that enable them to easily communicate - and for those who need it there's plenty of sensory toys on hand. Towards the end, they'll enjoy a calming period of guided relaxation, which most children and young people find lovely and soothing.
For younger children, I'll always talk with you as the parent about how best to work together, and about how you can gently support the process at home. You know your child best, and I see us very much as a team.
Is hypnotherapy safe for children and young minds?
Yes. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a safe, gentle and non-invasive approach, and your child remains relaxed, aware and in control throughout. I'm a registered member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), I'm fully insured and DBS-checked, I trained at the highly regarded CPHT in Bristol and I have extra specialist training in hypnotherapy for children.
Many young people notice positive changes within just a session or two, and most families I work with come for a shorter course of sessions rather than anything long-term. Everyone is different, though, and we'll always go at the right pace for your child.
Let's help your child feel like themselves again
The first step is a free, relaxed conversation on the phone, to talk through what's going on and how I can help. After that we can book a free initial consultation, where I can meet you and your child/young person.
