What happens in an initial consultation with me?

If you're thinking about having hypnotherapy, it's completely natural to feel a little unsure about what to expect. For some, deciding to come to therapy is already a big decision, and for many, hypnotherapy is not something they were familiar with. Only when they started to research different options did they realise it could be an extremely effective therapy option to help with anxiety, phobias, habits, confidence or feeling 'stuck' in life in some way.
A Relaxed Chat
All sessions with me are very relaxed and there's no pressure. The initial consultation is primarily an assessment and getting-to-know-you consultation, to understand your goals. It's an opportunity for us to get to know each other, for you to tell me a little about what's been happening, and for you to explore whether Solution Focused Hypnotherapy feels like the right approach for you.
We'll start with a few background questions, and we'll spend some time having a relaxed chat about you. What has brought you to see me? What would you like to be different? How would you like to feel if things were improving?
Exploring Outcomes
Some people come with a very clear goal - perhaps building confidence, or overcoming a specific phobia. Others just know they want life to feel easier, calmer, less stressful or more manageable. Some people simply know what they don't want life to look like any more. Wherever you're starting from is completely OK.
How The Mind Works
One of the things many clients find helpful is learning a little about how the brain responds to stress, anxiety and overwhelm. When we understand why we think, feel and react the way we do, things often start to make much more sense. Rather than feeling frustrated with yourself, you begin to understand that your brain is simply trying to protect you, even when it isn't always helping.
I'll explain how Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works, and why we spend more time focusing on the future you'd like to create rather than repeatedly revisiting the problem itself. This isn't about ignoring difficulties or pretending everything is positive. It's about helping your brain move towards the things that improve wellbeing, resilience and confidence.
Expectations
We'll also talk about simple ways of supporting your mental wellbeing between sessions, including the relaxation audio I include for clients to listen to at home between sessions, and the idea of positive action, positive interaction and positive thinking. This helps your mind and body switch out of stress mode and gives your brain an opportunity to recharge, something many of us rarely allow ourselves time to do. It's important to note that there are never any unrealistic expectations. Small, barely noticeable shifts can have a surprisingly powerful impact over time.
Hypnosis
As part of the session, I'll explain what hypnosis actually is. Many people arrive with misconceptions based on stage hypnosis or what they've seen on television. In reality, hypnosis is a gentle, natural and enjoyable state of focused attention, similar to becoming completely absorbed in a book, driving a regular route or daydreaming. You remain aware throughout and are always in control.
Children When I work with children and teens, parents will almost always be present for the initial consultation. Usually I'll have had a chat on the phone with the parent first; so the child can feel this is appointment is for them, not about them (if they feel comfortable). I'll spend time getting to know their likes and dislikes, maybe through games if appropriate, explain everything at an age-appropriate level, and let them ask questions and become familiar with the environment. I have lots of fidget toys available, and keep it engaging while still gathering all the relevant information to formulate a potential treatment plan.
Question Time
Most importantly, the initial consultation is a great opportunity for you to ask questions. Whether you'd like to know more about the approach, my training and experience, or simply explore if you feel I'm the right therapist for you, I'm always happy to answer anything you'd like to ask.
By the end, you'll have a much clearer understanding of how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works and whether you'd like to begin sessions with me.
