Wedding Anxiety - You Don't Have to Dread the Big Day

Updated: Feb 1

Wedding anxiety is more common than you think

When people imagine a wedding day, they often picture excitement, joy and romance. What’s talked about far less is the anxiety that can manifest.  Worries about all sorts of things can build up and take over - for the bride, the groom, or anyone involved in the wedding party:

  • Nervous brides who dread being the centre of attention

  • Grooms lying awake, worrying about vows or speeches

  • Best men feeling physically sick at the thought of standing up and talking

  • Couples overwhelmed by planning, expectations and pressure to make everything perfect

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and more importantly, you don’t have to just push through. If you are feeling relaxed about your upcoming wedding, you are in the minority!

Common wedding-related anxieties include:

  • Fear of being watched, filmed or photographed

  • Self-conscious about being the centre of attention

  • Panic about speeches or public speaking

  • Feeling overwhelmed, snappy or emotionally exhausted

  • Loss of sleep as the big day approaches

  • Pressure to meet expectations (family, social media, traditions)

  • Worrying about things going wrong

While friends and family may say “it’ll be fine on the day”, anxiety doesn’t tend to work that way. Your nervous system unfortunately doesn’t respond to logic, it responds to perceived threat.

My personal experience

This is something I understand deeply on a personal level.  On my own wedding day, I desperately wanted to relax and enjoy every moment, but I didn’t.

I had always hated being on video. I felt intensely self-conscious, hyper-aware of cameras, worried my face would look stiff or unnatural. Instead of being fully present, part of my mind was constantly monitoring how I looked and whether I was being filmed.

Knowing that I probably wouldn't look relaxed and feeling that embarrassment would be showing on my face, I actually didn't watch the video for 25 years! Finally, on our 25th wedding anniversary, my husband edited it down to 15 minutes - and although it was wonderful watching the memories back, I was immediately taken back to that feeling of self-consciousness - and all those years later, I could see the tightness and tension showing on my face in that video.

I wish I had known then what I know now. Watching the clips, I think what a shame it was that I couldn’t be myself, laughing and fully enjoying the moment. Even if others didn’t notice at the time, I certainly remember the feeling!

Years later, I had solution focused hypnotherapy specifically for being on camera, and that long-held fear disappeared. Completely.  Not only can I now be on video without anxiety, I can also confidently create my own social media videos, relaxed, expressive and comfortable in myself. I wish I’d had that confidence on my wedding day!

How solution focused hypnotherapy helps wedding nerves and speech anxiety

Solution focused hypnotherapy doesn’t dwell on past events or analyse problems endlessly. Instead, it helps your mind learn calm, confidence and control, quickly and effectively.

It can help you:

  • Feel calm and grounded rather than overwhelmed

  • Reduce fear of attention, speeches or being filmed

  • Sleep better in the run-up to the day

  • Feel confident, present and emotionally steady

  • Actually enjoy the experience rather than endure it

Are you worried about your wedding day being something you simply survive rather than fully enjoy? Or are you worrying about doing your very best for a friend or family member you care about, on their big day?

Imagine this instead…

What if you could:

  • Walk into your wedding day feeling calmer, more confident and excited

  • Stand up for photos or speeches without fear

  • Be fully present, laughing, relaxed and yourself

  • Look back on the day knowing you truly enjoyed it

If you’re getting married this year, or your big day is fast approaching, it’s not too late to change how you feel about it. You don’t have to face your wedding day dreading it.
