Small Steps, Big Changes: What Really Happens When People Come to See Me

Almost everyone who walks through my door arrives with a similar underlying issue, even though it may be manifesting itself in what they're experiencing very differently. They are all feeling stuck in some way.
Sometimes, it manifests as anxiety that hums away in the background all day, or not sleeping well. Sometimes, it looks like stress that has built up and up to become the normal setting, or maybe it's a low mood or lack of motivation that has hung around far longer than anyone expected. Sometimes, it's a fear or unwanted habit that gets in the way of ordinary life. Often, clients are left wondering why they can't seem to move forward, or overcome their difficulties by themselves.
Why do people come to me for hypnotherapy? The issues people bring me are wonderfully varied. I see clients for generalised anxiety, stress and low mood. People come to me when they want to overcome a phobia, whether that is flying, heights or birds, or something they assume nobody else has ever mentioned, like balloons or signing documents in front of another person. I work with people who want to cut down on alcohol, lose weight, stay off Ozempic, stop biting their nails or stop picking their skin. And I see lots of people who simply want to feel more confident, whether that is in social situations, a new job, standing up to present at work, or giving a speech at a wedding without their heart racing.
If you have been quietly wondering whether your particular 'thing' is too big or too small, too strange or too silly to bring to a hypnotherapist, I can promise you it is not. I have most likely heard it, or something very similar, before.
Small steps lead to big changes
One of the things I love most about working as a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist is that change rarely looks like a dramatic single moment. Positive changes build, sometimes very quickly, sometimes with a little more time. Clients take one small step that felt impossible a week ago, then another, then another. Before long, they look back and realise the transformative distance they have travelled.
This is key, because many people arrive expecting to have to overhaul their entire life in one go - and that sounds hard, it sounds like a lot of effort. Maybe you've tried willpower already, and willpower on its own is exhausting. In clinical hypnotherapy, instead we work with the way your mind actually functions, which means the change tends to feel far more natural and far less like a fight. It's a gentle, effective process that takes advantage of the brains ability to reform new neural pathways that start to become automatic ways of reacting and behaving.
Your brain loves a pattern
Here is the part that can surprise people. Because the brain is a pattern matching machine, once it learns a new response, it does not reserve that response for that one situation only, it starts matching to other similar situations and applying it elsewhere.
So what this means in practice is that a client might come to see me for anxiety and confidence, and a few weeks later they mention, almost as an afterthought, that they have started enjoying taking care of their appearance again, or that their drinking has dropped off without them really trying, or that the healthy eating they had struggled with for years has finally clicked into place.
One of my favourite examples is a client who came to overcome a fear of flying. She got on the plane, which was wonderful. What she didn't predict was her telling me months later that she was no longer frightened of bees and wasps either. Her mind had learned something useful about staying calm around a perceived threat, and it generously applied that lesson somewhere else entirely, without her even trying.
That's why, when someone says they have three or four things they would like to change, we do not need to tackle each one separately. We always look at where are you now, where do you want to be, start making very small changes towards that goal, and very often the rest begins to shift alongside it.
You don't need to have it all worked out
People sometimes apologise for not being able to explain exactly what is wrong. That is completely fine, you do not need a neat explanation, or a plan you'd like to follow. You just need a sense that something could be better than it is right now, and the change you want will organically happen in the direction that's right for you.
The feeling of being stuck doesn't have to be a permanent state. It's a pattern, and the wonderful thing is that those patterns can change.
We don't go into the past One of the things clients tell me they enjoy the most about the solution focused approach is not just the progress they make, but that we don't have to delve into problems. Once you've given me some idea of why you've come to see me and how you would like things to be instead, during the initial consultation, we focus very much on your preferred outcome, on a positive future. There is no need to identify where the patterns came from, go over any past trauma, or revisit pain from your past. That's one of the huge positives about the solution focused approach, for many people.
Sessions with me Sessions with me are completely tailored each time you come to see me, but they will always include some useful insights into how the brain works, transformative techniques that will help move you towards your goal, and gentle hypnosis to consolidate that forward momentum. You're always in control - and it's an enjoyable, effective experience which leaves you feeling relaxed and uplifted after sessions. An initial consultation is the best way to gain an in depth insight into how solution focused hypnotherapy might be able to help you with the particular issue(s) you'd like to address. There's never any obligation or pressure, I am always happy to chat and answer any questions.
