Group Hypnotherapy Explained: A Powerful Tool for Personal and Workplace Wellbeing

When people first hear the words "group hypnotherapy", it tends to throw up a LOT of questions!
Are we going to be made to do things in front of other people?
Do we all sit in a circle and share our deepest fears?
Do people have to talk about what they are struggling with?
Will everyone be hypnotised at the same time?
The good news is that group hypnotherapy is much calmer, simpler and more private than many people imagine. And no, there is absolutely no sharing required.
What Is Group Hypnotherapy?
Attending a group Hypnotherapy session is a wonderful way to experience the benefits of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy in a relaxed and supportive setting.
Instead of working one to one, you are part of a group of people who may all be looking for a similar outcome. This might be better sleep, reduced anxiety or stress, increased confidence or motivation, improved wellbeing or simply a chance to switch off from the pressures of everyday life.
Sessions are carefully guided by me (a qualified and experienced Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist), so everyone knows what to expect and can simply relax into the process.
Group sessions are becoming increasingly popular, particularly within workplaces where employers are looking for practical, affordable and effective ways to support employee wellbeing.
No Sharing Required
One of the first things I always want people to know is that you do not have to share personal information in a group hypnotherapy session.
· You do not have to talk about your past.
· You do not have to explain why you are there.
· You do not have to tell the group anything private.
In fact, you don’t have to speak at all.
This can be a huge relief for people who would like support but feel nervous about opening up in front of others. The focus is not on discussing problems. The focus is on helping your brain move towards calm, confidence and positive change.
Many people find it reassuring to know they can simply sit back, listen and enjoy the experience without any pressure to participate verbally. There's always an opportunity to ask questions at the end, but during the session there is no interaction.

What Happens in a Session?
A group hypnotherapy session is usually 1 hour. It begins with a gentle explanation of how the brain works and why we can sometimes get stuck in patterns of stress, anxiety or unhelpful thinking. We then look at how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help calm the mind, reduce the brain's threat response and encourage more helpful patterns of thought.
Often, we will do a few short, effective exercises to really focus the mind on the positive changes each individual would like to move towards, based on their own strengths, experiences and personal aspirations or goals. (Again, no sharing required).
After that, I guide the group into hypnosis. This is not stage hypnosis... nobody loses control, and nobody is made to do anything they're not comfortable with. From the outside, it simply looks like deep relaxation. (For more information about the difference between hypnosis and deep relaxation, see this blog article - What Happens To Your Brain During Hypnosis.)
Clinical hypnosis is a deeply relaxed state of focused attention. Many people describe it as feeling similar to daydreaming, meditation or that lovely drifting feeling just before sleep.
Everyone remains in control throughout.
Why Does It Work in a Group?
Group hypnotherapy can feel incredibly powerful because there is something reassuring about being with other people who are also choosing to prioritise their wellbeing.
You are not being asked to share, but you are still part of something supportive. That shared intention can feel calming, encouraging, motivating, and safe.
It can also be a very accessible way for people to experience hypnotherapy, especially if they are curious about how it works or would like support in a gentle, low-pressure environment.
A Valuable Tool for Workplace Wellbeing
One area where group hypnotherapy is proving particularly valuable is workplace wellbeing.
Many organisations genuinely want to support their employees' mental health but are looking for solutions that are practical, cost-effective and easy for people to access. Group hypnotherapy can provide exactly that.
I offer workplace wellbeing sessions both in person and online. While I mainly work across Dorset and Hampshire for face-to-face sessions, many employers choose online sessions because they allow staff to join from the comfort of their own homes or offices at a time that works for everyone. Staff can be based across the UK (or Europe/North America) and easily access group sessions without requiring travel.
Sessions can be delivered during the working day or in the evening, depending on the needs of the organisation.
Some employers choose a one-off wellbeing session to support staff during particularly busy periods, while others prefer a structured programme delivered over several weeks to help employees develop lasting positive habits and coping strategies.
One of the aspects employers particularly value is the ability to measure outcomes. Before and after a programme, participants can complete wellbeing questionnaires which provide tangible evidence of improvements in areas such as stress, anxiety, confidence and overall wellbeing.
This means organisations can see real data, demonstrating the positive impact their investment in wellbeing has had on their employees.
More Than Just Hypnotherapy
As well as running group hypnotherapy sessions, I am also happy to speak at workplace events, wellbeing days, conferences, networking groups and social events.
These sessions can include a fascinating introduction to how the brain works, practical insights into stress and wellbeing, and a guided relaxation or hypnosis experience that allows everyone to leave feeling calmer, more focused and deeply relaxed.
It's often a completely different experience from what people expect and one that tends to generate lots of positive feedback afterwards.
What Can Group Hypnotherapy Help With?
Group hypnotherapy can be helpful for:
Stress and anxiety reduction
Better sleep
Confidence
Relaxation
Anxiety management
Motivation
Positive mindset
Workplace wellbeing
Burnout prevention
Exam or performance nerves
Building resilience
Some group sessions may have a specific theme, such as relaxation, sleep, confidence or stress management. Others may be designed more generally to help people feel calmer, more focused and more in control.
What If Attendees Are Nervous?
That is completely normal. Many people feel a little unsure before their first session, especially if they have never experienced hypnotherapy before.
All attendees can simply sit, listen and relax. There is no pressure to perform, speak or do anything other than be comfortable.
· You cannot get stuck in hypnosis.
· You will not be asleep.
· You will not lose control.
You will simply be guided into a calm, relaxed state where your mind can focus on positive change.
A Gentle Way to Experience Hypnotherapy
Group hypnotherapy is a wonderful introduction to the work I do at Dorset Hypnotherapy Practice.
· It is calm, supportive and completely confidential.
· You do not have to share your story.
· You do not have to explain your reasons for coming.
· You just need to bring yourself, an open mind and a willingness to relax.
Whether you're attending as an individual, joining as part of a workplace wellbeing programme or taking part in a community event, group hypnotherapy offers an opportunity to pause, recharge and give your mind some much needed breathing space.
Sometimes, taking that first step is the biggest part of the change. And in a group session, you get to take that step in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.
