Why We Gain Weight in Perimenopause

Exploring a big reason behind weight gain (it's not just food!), the changes we can make to gain back control, and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help.

Hypnotherapy can support feeling like yourself again during and after perimenopause.

I know from personal experience that perimenopause (and menopause) can feel like a turning point that no one fully prepared us for. I made no changes to my eating or exercise, and suddenly found myself piling on the pounds with seemingly no way back.

The same habits and behaviours just don't work any more

You may find yourself eating the same way you always have, moving your body as you always did, and yet suddenly the weight begins to creep on, especially around the middle. It can feel frustrating, confusing, and, at times, deeply personal. For many of us, it’s the first time we seem to be losing control and no amount of dieting, exercise, or habit changes really have an effect. I know I used to be able to be 'good' for a few weeks or even a month or two, and the pounds would fall away.

The truth is, weight gain during perimenopause is not simply about willpower or a healthy lifestyle in terms of nutrition and exercise. It is often the result of hormonal shifts, stress, and a nervous system that has been under pressure for far too long.

At Dorset Hypnotherapy Practice (based online and in Ferndown, Dorset, UK), I often work with women who want to regain control in a way that feels sustainable.  In order to promote positive change, it’s incredibly helpful, empowering even, to gain an understanding of what’s happening in our bodies and minds.

Why Weight Gain Happens in Perimenopause

During perimenopause, levels of oestrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate. These hormonal changes can affect:

  • metabolism

  • blood sugar balance

  • sleep quality

  • mood regulation

  • appetite signals

  • fat storage

Have you ever felt:

  • exhausted but wired?

  • reactive but numb?

  • tired but unable to properly rest?

This often happens because the nervous system becomes stuck in survival mode. When the brain perceives ongoing stress, it increases production of cortisol, the body's main stress hormone.

The Role of Cortisol – It has a lot to answer for!

When cortisol remains elevated for long periods, it can:

  • encourage the body to store more abdominal fat

  • increase cravings for sugar and comfort foods

  • slow digestion

  • reduce motivation

  • disrupt sleep

  • increase inflammation

  • make it harder to feel calm and in control

Cortisol was designed to protect us in short bursts, but modern life can keep the body switched into a constant low-level stress response, which leaves us permanently in a cortisol-producing state. Over time, that can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself, and struggling with all the issues above.

It’s common to hear: "I didn't realise my nervous system was completely dysregulated. I just knew I didn't feel like me anymore" or, "I knew something was wrong, but felt stuck and had no idea how to move forward".

Why Old Habits Feel So Hard to Change

By the time perimenopause arrives, many of our eating habits and emotional responses have become deeply embedded in the subconscious mind. That means you may consciously want to make healthy choices, while another part of you automatically reaches for:

  • sugar for comfort

  • wine to unwind

  • snacking to soothe stress

  • avoidance when motivation disappears

This is not weakness, it is simply the subconscious trying to protect you with old patterns that no longer serve you.

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Can Help

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works by helping to calm the nervous system while gently rewiring unhelpful patterns held in the subconscious mind. Rather than focusing on what is wrong, we focus on helping your mind move toward what you want instead. Weight-loss in perimenopause is rarely only about food, it’s about regulating the nervous system. When the mind feels calmer, healthier choices often follow naturally.

Hypnotherapy for perimenopause and hypnotherapy for weight management can help you create a lasting mindset shift:

  • reduce stress and lower cortisol

  • improve sleep quality

  • reconnect with your body's natural signals

  • feel more motivated

  • reduce emotional eating

  • create healthier habits naturally

  • build a kinder relationship with yourself

In hypnosis, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive change. This allows the brain to begin:

  • letting go of old behaviour patterns

  • creating healthier automatic responses

  • developing a calmer mindset

  • supporting long-lasting change

Instead of battling yourself every day, change can begin to feel easier.

What You Can Do Outside Hypnotherapy

Alongside hypnotherapy, there are gentle ways to support your body and nervous system:

1. Prioritise protein. Protein helps stabilise blood sugar and supports metabolism. Aim to include protein with each meal.

2. Regulate your nervous system daily. Simple, positive activities can help signal safety to the body:

  • slow breathing

  • walking in nature

  • gentle yoga

  • stretching

  • mindfulness

3. Improve sleep hygiene. Poor sleep increases cortisol and cravings. Try:

  • reducing caffeine later in the day

  • limiting screens before bed

  • keeping a regular bedtime

  • listening to a relaxation MP3

4. Strength training. Muscle naturally supports metabolism, which can decline in midlife. Many studies show strength training to be more effective than cardio for weight loss in older women.

5. Be kinder to yourself. Stress around weight can itself raise cortisol levels. Compassion can be much more powerful than criticism. Ask yourself, would you talk like that to a friend?

You Are Not Losing Control

If your body feels unfamiliar during perimenopause, it does not mean you are failing, it may simply mean your body is telling you it now needs a different kind of support, a different way forward.

When we calm the nervous system and work with the subconscious rather than against it, lasting change becomes possible. You can feel like yourself again, and you can create a healthier relationship with your body, from the inside out.
