Are you caught in an anxiety loop – and you feel you can’t escape?

When I see clients with generalised anxiety, they often have a strong cycle of negative self-talk and self-criticism… a relentless mental loop that keeps anxiety firmly in place.
Anxiety is caused by negative thinking about what’s going on for us now, as well as negatively forecasting the future or dwelling on the past. It’s fuelled by an ongoing inner dialogue. Thoughts race around, such as:
“I’m not good enough.”
“I’m going to get this wrong.”
“Something bad is about to happen.”
“I should be coping better than this.”
That constant stream of internal pressure keeps the nervous system on high alert. When the mind is repeatedly scanning for danger, even when that danger is imagined, the body responds as though the threat is real. The result is hypervigilance - so that we are always feeling on edge, always bracing for the next thing to go wrong. Over time, this pattern tends to show up as:
· Persistent fear or dread
· Self-doubt and low confidence
· Procrastination or avoidance
· Overthinking
· Inability to make decisions
· Difficulty thinking clearly or rationally
When we are caught in this cycle, we often feel completely stuck. Everything feels overwhelming. Even small decisions can feel risky. It’s not that you’re not capable, it’s that anxiety narrows your thinking and magnifies perceived threats.
What’s particularly powerful is that the anxiety is often reinforced by our relationship with our own thoughts. The more we criticise ourselves for feeling anxious, the stronger the cycle becomes; “Why can’t I deal with this?”, or “Why can't I stop myself feeling this way, when I know it’s not helpful?”
Much of the therapeutic work in hypnotherapy, therefore, isn’t about “getting rid” of anxiety. It’s about changing the client’s relationship with their thoughts. Reprogramming how we think about situations and how we think about ourselves. When the inner self-attack softens, the nervous system can begin to settle. As self-compassion increases, clarity returns. Confidence starts to rebuild.
Anxiety thrives on negativity. It reduces when understanding takes its place, and we can slowly step out of that cycle and into more helpful ways of thinking.
If you recognise this pattern in yourself, know that it’s not a personal flaw. It’s a learned cycle. The wonderful thing is, that we know neuroplasticity means that learned cycles can be undone, and new, positive and helpful habits and behaviours can be installed. Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) enables that process to happen gently and effectively, using a combination of talk therapy, neurolinguistic programming (NLP) techniques and hypnosis.
If you’d like to explore how the power of SFH can empower you to move forward and escape the “stuck” anxiety cycle, contact me for an initial consultation. I’d love to chat with you!
